The Series Finale I Wish Girlfriends Received

If you follow my TikTok or keep up with my blogs, then you should know that I am the biggest Girlfriends fan. I am still disappointed that we did not get a proper series finale and equally disappointed that we didn’t get to see Toni again (even if just for one episode). However, as a dedicated fan and screenwriter, I’ve decided to put the pen to paper and draft an outline of how I think or wished the final season would have been for one of the best Black sitcoms.

The unanswered question everyone was left asking: Did Aaron return home? YES! Like, duh! How could he not? So, let's start there:

·        Aaron comes home. And they marry as planned. Joan FINALLY gets her dream wedding, and surprisingly, she is not a bridezilla. (Isn’t it ironic that she was kicked out of everyone else’s wedding?)

·        During the wedding planning, Aaron displays signs of PTSD. However, in all the wedding planning excitement, it was ignored, or perhaps he worked really hard to conceal it. However, during the engagement party, the sound of a cork popping from a champagne bottle startles him, and he has a flashback to the war. (If you remember, Joan was starting to advocate and support families whose parents were deployed. The Christmas episode when she guilt-tripped the partners to buy toys for the soldiers' kids.)

·        This triggers the couple to go to premarital therapy. Here they grow as a couple and truly learn what “for better or worse” means.

·        Working through Aaron’s PTSD requires Joan to compromise a lot. Mya becomes needy because she is in denial of becoming addicted to pain medication. William also clings to Joan as he and Monica are adjusting to their new baby. Lynn resumes her neediness as she is trying to pivot her music career. This is going to force Joan to reevaluate her relationships and the trajectory of her life. She basically has to question if she can be a wife, friend, business owner, and woman, and how that will look for her.

·        When she enforces boundaries, everyone but Mya is accepting. Mya then blames her for her first divorce from Darnell. In essence, Mya is jealous because Joan is happy while she is scrambling to find a career since her career as a writer failed. She is also mourning the loss of her baby still, and William and Monica’s new baby is triggering her deeply, although she won’t admit it. She just becomes insufferable to everyone. This causes Joan to kick her out of the wedding.

·        A lot of the season we see Joan and Aaron growing both as a couple and individuals. They adopt a dog. (Remember that was part of her dream with Brock. Kids and a rescue dog.)

·        As she is finalizing the wedding party, she has a moment of sadness for the end of her and Toni’s friendship. Therefore, she travels to NYC to visit her.

·        In NYC, we see that Toni and Todd have worked through their problems and are on the road to reconciling. Toni is juggling NYC real estate, motherhood, and Todd. Joan appearing at her business forces her to act in typical Toni fashion (unbothered and unimpressed). However, when Joan accepts the rejection and leaves, Toni softens, and the two go for dinner.

·        At dinner, they clear the air. Then Joan asks her to be her maid of honor, to which Toni corrects her and says, “You mean matron of honor.” Because you know Toni still has to rub it in her face that she got married first.

·        Joan returns to LA, and she and Mya reconcile.

·        The final episode is her wedding. She and Aaron prepared their own vows, and she has the wedding she had been obsessing over the entire series.

As I previously mentioned, I am STILL mad that this show did not get its proper good-bye; however, that is showbiz for you. Isn’t it ironic that Sex and the City had TWO movies and a reboot? I’ll admit I did not watch the reboot, but the movie… (that’s for another blog post). Again, this is just me using my imagination and context from the show to predict how this could have or should have ended. Be sure to share this with a Girlfriend’s fan, and as always, comment which show you want me to explore next.
